Current situation
The hospital has a capacity of forty (40) beds. It offers outpatient and inpatient services including medical, surgical, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS care and preventive services like immunization. The hospital has a functional theatre with two operating beds. The hospital has a strong linkage to the surrounding community through its network of community health workers.
There is no major hospital in the North Eastern part of Kampala District to act as a buffer to Mulago Hospital, the national referral and teaching hospital, which is currently overwhelmed with high numbers of patients seeking care. This compromises the National referral hospital’s primary function of offering super specialized care, teaching and research. community through its network of community health workers.
St. Stephen’s Church of Uganda Mpererwe, the founding body for St. Stephen’s Hospital, in partnership with the Ministry of Health is desirous of expanding the hospital from 40 to 100 beds. This is intended to transform St.Stephen’s Hospital into a major referral hospital for emergency surgical and maternal care. The aim is to decongest Mulago Hospital, the National referral Hospital. This necessitates the construction of a ward and theater block with 100 beds, an administration block and students’ center block.
GOAL
To transform St Stephens Hospital Mpererwe into a centre of excellence in emergency surgical and maternity care in our community
Our plan
We plan to obtain a grant worth US dollars 300,000, which will enable the hospital to expand to a 100 bed hospital. This will be achieved by erecting 3 storied blocks on the available land that will accommodate inpatient, administration and a students’ center. Each of these blocks is estimated to cost $100,000 although we plan to have the construction done in a period of 3 years. Sustainability will be ensured through cost sharing and fees paid by the exchange students on the global health program.
Brick by brick, we are building a healthier future. Join us in laying the foundation for our new hospital . Your contribution today saves lives for generations to come.
